Einordnung:
Physiphora smaragdina gehört zur Unterfamilie Ulidiinae, Tribus Ulidiini.
Verbreitung:
Mittelmeerraum (Spanien, Marokko, Tunesien, Ägypten und Israel), Subsahara-Afrika von Kap Verde und Gambia über den Tschad nach Kenia, Malawi, Mosambik, Namibia und Südafrika; Arabische Halbinsel.
Beschreibung:
Physiphora smaragdina ist eine metallisch glänzende Schmuckfliege mit auffällig gestreiften Augen, durchscheinenden Flügeln mit gelblichen Adern und einer Flügellänge von 2,9 - 4,5 mm. Physiphora smaragdina besitzt eine Körperlänge zwischen 3,2 und 5,5 mm. Die Beine (einschließlich der Vordertarsen) sind dunkelbraun bis schwarz mit Ausnahme der ganz oder zum Teil gelblichen Tarsen der Mittel- und Hinterbeine.
Bei der ähnlichen, auf den Kanarischen Inseln nachgewiesenen Physiphora alceae ist das 1. Tarsenglied der Vorderbeine ab der Basis zu 3/4 gelblich.
Lebensweise:
Die Larven der Schmuckfliegen ernähren sich von zerfallendem pflanzlichen und tierischen Material und von Exkrementen.
