Classification:
Gonioctena quinquepunctata/intermedia belongs to the subfamily Chrysomelinae, tribe Gonioctenini.
Biology:
The larvae of the subgenus Goniomena live on plants of the willow (Salicaceae) and rose (Rosaeae) family. They pass through 4 larval stages and pupate in the soil.
The larvae of the species shown here lived on rowan Sorbus aucuparia) and ate holes in the leaves of their host plant. Since the mature larvae had no chance to dig themselves into the soil in the breeding container, they gnawed small caves in kitchen paper for pupation.
The fresh pupae were initially monochrome light green. Later they took on a more yellowish/brownish shade. Their eyes turned dark and shortly before hatching also their wings. The still uncolored adults had transparent wing covers when hatching. The next day the beetles had reached their final coloration.
I offered the hatched beetles willow and rowan leaves as food. They only ate rowan.
In my impression, the beetles are mainly nocturnal and hide during the day.
Note:
Gonioctena quinquepunctata, which is frequently found in Germany, can only be safely separated from the rarer, long overlooked Gonioctena intermedia by genital examination.
