Classification:
Anatis ocellata belongs to the subfamily Coccinellinae, tribe Coccinellini. The beetle is the only representative of the genus Anatis in Central Europe.Distribution:

Coniferous and mixed forests.Description:
The Eyed Ladybird is the largest native ladybird species with a length of 8 to 9 mm. The mostly brownish-red, sometimes orange-brown beetles can be easily identified by their black spots with bright border. However, these black spots can be missing completely or partially in some specimens. Then a look at the characteristic black marking of the yellowish white pronotum helps in the determination.The larvae can reach a length of 15 mm.
Biology:
Anatis ocellata lives on conifers. The larvae and imagines feed mainly on aphids of the families Adelgidae (all species live on conifers), Lachnidae and Aphididae. Other small insects, such as sawfly larvae and caterpillars are also on the beetles' menu.The imagines hibernate in litter, bark crevices and other protected places.
Anatis ocellata is monovoltin, i.e. the beetles form one generation per year.
Explanation to the pictures:
The photos from June 2017 show a pupa and the beetle hatched from it. After hatching, the wings of the beetle are still soft and must harden. The initially transparent wing covers (elytra) change colour. After a few hours, the eye pattern characteristic of the species becomes visible. The underside of the beetle, which is still light after hatching, also looks significantly darker the following day.References, further reading, links:
