Classification:
Baccha elongata belongs to the subfamily Syrphinae, tribe Bacchini.
Distribution:
Holarctic.
Habitat:
Moist and shady deciduous and coniferous forests, more common in lower altitudes.
Description:
Extremely slender species with a body length of 7 - 11 mm. The eyes of the males are touching.
Baccha may be confused with Sphegina but is much larger and slimmer.
Biology:
Baccha elongata flies in 2 generations from April to June and from July to September or October. The imagines visit flowers of daisy family (Asteraceae), rose plants (Rosaceae) and umbelliferae (Apiaceae). The larvae live on herbaceous plants and feed on leaf lice and scale insects.
