Classification:
Cheilosia albipila belongs to the subfamily Eristalinae, tribe Rhingiini.
Distribution:
Southern Fennoscandia south to the Pyrenees; Ireland eastwards through parts of northern and central Europe into European Russia and on to central Siberia.
Habitat:
Wetland, humid deciduous and coniferous forest, forest edges and clearings.
Description:
The long and rather densely hairy Cheilosia albipila has a body length of 8 - 12 mm. The third antenna segment is mostly orange-brown. In the males, the hind femurs are in large part black, and in the females bright.
Biology:
Cheilosia albipila overwinters as a pupa. Adults fly from March to May and visit flowering trees, shrubs and spring flowers, like Betula, Caltha, Cardamine, Corylus, Prunus spinosa, Ribes uvacrispa, Salix, Taraxacum, Tussilago and Vaccinium.
The larvae are stem miners in Carduus and Cirsium palustre.
