Classification:
Chlorochroa pinicola belongs to the subfamily Pentatominae, tribe Carbocorini.
Distribution:
In large parts of Europe; missing in the British Isles.
Habitat:
On conifers.
Description:
Body length 11 - 14 mm; olive green to brownish-grey with dense and fine brownish puncture; white margins; tip of the scutellum whitish; 2nd to 5th antennal segment black; 2nd antennal segment almost twice as long as the 3rd; rostrum (sucking and piercing mouthparts) reaching the 3rd abdominal segment.
Similar species:
A similar species is Chlorochroa juniperina. In this species the rostrum reaches at most the 2nd abdominal segment. The first two antennal segments are green and the 3rd to 5th are black.
Biology:
Chlorochroa pinicola lives mostly on pines (Pinus), frequently on Scotch pines (Pinus sylvestris), more rarely on spruces (Pícea). The species was also found on junipers (Juníperus).
Chlorochroa pinicola is a phytophagous species sucking mainly on conifers. In studies on the mass propagation of the Bordered White (Bupalus pinarius), a striking number of eggs of Chlorochroa pinicola were found on the needles of the pines in addition to the eggs of the Bordered White. In experiments it was shown that the larvae of Chlorochroa pinicola sucked on eggs of the Bordered White. The caterpillars up to the 3rd instar were also sucked and killed by the young larvae of Chlorochroa pinicola if their movement was restricted by cold stiffness, moulting or hatching.
Chlorochroa pinicola forms one generation per year. The species hibernates as adult.
Note:
The pictures from 2019 show a wintering animal that I found on a sunny day in February on a young, about 50 cm high spruce.
