Classification:
Rhaphigaster nebulosa belongs to the subfamily Pentatominae, tribe Pentatomini.
Distribution:
Palearctic.
Habitat:
Gardens, parks, orchards, steppes - often on deciduous trees and shrubs.
Description:
Body length 14 - 16 mm; body brown, grey and yellowish-white mottled, with irregularly distributed black fovea on the top side; antennae black with yellowish-white rings at the base of 3rd, 4th and 5th segment; underside with a long forward spine between coxa and small black spots.
Similar species:
A similar species is the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug Halyomorpha halys native to Asia, which was introduced into Europe. It does not have a spine on the underside.
Biology:
The thermophilic and diurnal Mottled Shieldbug Rhaphigaster nebulosa forms in Central Europe one generation per year. It is often found in settlements and has been visiting my balcony for some years in September and October. The species hibernates as an imago in sheltered places. The females lay their eggs on plants in late spring. After hatching, the larvae pass through 5 larval stages until final moult to imago, capable to fly.
Imagines and larvae are phytophagous. They suck plant sap.
Natural enemies:
Adults of Rhaphigaster nebulosa are parasitized by the larvae of the tachinid fly Cylindromyia bicolor.
The fly lays an egg on the host. After hatching, the fly larva enters the host's abdomen and begins to feed from inside. The larva spends the winter in the host and continues feeding in spring until it leaves the host to pupate.
