Classification:
Troilus luridus belongs to the subfamily Asopinae.
Distribution:
Europe, Asia.
Habitat:
Preferred in humid environments on shrubs, deciduous and coniferous trees.
Description:
Body length 10 - 13 mm; body finely speckled, with bronze, green or violet shimmer; 4th antennal segment with orange band at the tip; pronotum with rounded corners and teeth at the frontal side edges; scutellum without orange tip.
The larvae are contrasty and colourful and show a green-metallic shimmer in the last stage.
Biology:
The Bronze Shieldbug
Troilus luridus forms one generation per year.
The species hibernates as an imago in the litter, in moss, under bark or in other protected places. After mating in spring, females start laying eggs in May. A female lays a total of about 200 eggs. After hatching, the young larvae suck plant sap and, like the adults, begin to feed predatorily on insects. Here 2nd instar larvae can be seen sucking on a Brassow Willow Leaf Beetle. Preferred prey of
Troilus luridus are caterpillars, hymenoptera larvae, beetles and their larvae, and aphids.
Note:
The pictures from 2014 show all stages of development from egg to imago. The larvae of the Bronze Shieldbug fed on larvae of the Alder Leaf Beetle (
Agelastica alni) and on Brassy Willow Leaf Beetles (
Phratora vitellinae).
