Classification:
Chalcosyrphus nemorum belongs to the subfamily Eristalinae, tribe Milesiini.
Distribution:
Fennoscandia south to the Pyrenees; Ireland eastwards through much of northern, central and southern Europe (to southern Italy) into Russia and on to the Pacific coast (Sakhalin, Japan); in North America from Alaska to Nova Scotia and south to California.
Habitat:
Preferably in wet deciduous and mixed forests, often at the edge of waters.
Description:
The fly has a body length of 7 - 10 mm. The thorax is dark. The short abdomen has orange / yellowish spots on the 2nd and 3rd segments.
Biology:
Chalcosyrphus nemorum flies from April to September. Adults visit white umbellifers, Anemone nemorosa, Caltha, Euphorbia amygdaloides, Potentilla erecta, Ranunculus, Rubus idaeus, Sorbus aucuparia and Taraxacum.
The larvae live under the bark of water-sotten timber and in damp tree rot-holes.
