Classification:
Dasysyrphus tricinctus belongs to the subfamily Syrphinae, tribe Syrphini.
Distribution:
Iceland south to the Pyrenees and northern Spain; from Ireland and Fennoscandia eastwards through much of central and northern Europe and Russia to the Pacific coast and Japan.
Habitat:
Deciduous and coniferous forest, also in adjacent open areas, like heaths, grassland and in parks.
Description:
Dasysyrphus tricinctus has a body length of 9 - 12 mm. Thorax and abdomen have a shiny black base color. The thorax is monochrome and without markings. The abdomen shows some yellow markings. On the third segment there is a broad and on the 4th a narrow in the middle interrupted yellow stripe. The 2nd segment is either completely black or has two small yellow spots. The eyes are hairy.
Biology:
Dasysyrphus tricinctus flies in 2 generations from April to October. Adults are mainly active in April/May and in August/September. They visit a wide range of flowers, including yellow composites, white umbellifers, Calluna, Campanula, Convolvulus, Cornus, Euphorbia, Geranium, Parnassia, Plantago, Polygonum, Ranunculus, Sedum, Sorbus, Stellaria, Succisa and Valeriana.
Larvae were frequently found with aphids on Acer pseudoplatanus. Larvae have also been observed predating sawfly larvae on Picea and lepidopterous larvae on deciduous trees.
