Habitat:
Wet deciduous and coniferous forests, wetlands, margins of pools, brooks and rivers.
Description:
Eristalis lineata has a body length of 11 - 14.5 mm. The whitish-haired face shows a bare, broad, shiny black median strip. The 2nd abdominal segment is completely dull and has a pair of brownish yellow spots. Sometimes the 3rd abdominal segment along the front edge is brownish yellow. The hind legs are yellow at the base. The hind feet are black. At the center of the wing is a more or less clear zigzag band. The wing stigma is 1.5 - 2 times as long as it is wide.
Biology:
Eristalis lineata flies in several generations from April to October. Adults visit the flowers of a wide range of Compositae, Umbelliferae, Ranunculaceae and Rosaceae and also some plants from other families.
In the breeding of the species, the larvae hatched from the eggs after 2 to 3 days developed in 12 to 13 days. The pupal stage lasted 9 - 11 days (Doležil 1972).
Annotation:
Eristalis lineata (Harris, 1776) = Eristalis horticola (De Geer, 1776)
