Classification:
Leucozona glaucia belongs to the subfamily Syrphinae, tribe Syrphini.
Distribution:
From Fennoscandia south to the Pyrenees; from Ireland east through mountainous parts of central Europe into Turkey and European parts of Russia; throughout Siberia to the tundra zone and on to the Pacific coast (Kuril Islands, Japan).
Habitat:
Clearings in humid deciduous forests, forest edges.
Description:
Body length 11 - 13 mm; wing with dark stigma on the front edge; eyes hairy; thorax dull brown, without lateral yellow stripes; yellow scutellum; abdomen black, oblong, tergit 2 with a pale band, sometimes interrupted in the middle, 3rd and 4th tergits with narrow spots.
A similar species occurring in Germany is Leucozona laternaria. This has a black scutellum with a yellow trailing edge. In Leucozona glaucia the scutellum is yellow.
Biology:
Leucozona glaucia flies from June to August in one generation. Adults visit the flowers of white umbelliferae, Filipendula, Sambucus and Senecio. They are most commonly found on Heracleum sphondylium.
The larvae undergo a mandatory diapause in the third stage.
Annotation:
Some authors consider Ischyrosyrphus not as a subgenus, but as a genus.
