Classification:
Leucozona lucorum belongs to the subfamily Syrphinae, tribe Syrphini.
Distribution:
From Fennoscandia south to the Pyrenees and northern Spain; from Ireland eastwards through Eurasia to the Pacific coast (Sakhalin and Kuril Islands); Japan; in North America, from Alaska south to Oregon and New York.
Habitat:
Moist deciduous forest, scrub woodland and hedgerows, moist flower-rich grassland.
Description:
Body length 10 - 12 mm; wing with a medial black spot; thorax dull, orange hairy, without lateral yellow stripes; abdomen black with a light broad band on tergit 2, sometimes interrupted shortly in the middle; female: abdomen oval, band on tergit 2 velvety white; male: abdomen oblong, band on tergit 2 blue-gray.
A similar species occurring in Central Europe is Leucozona inopinata which has black hair on abdominal tergit 4. In Leucozona lucorum the hair is white to pale yellow.
Biology:
Leucozona lucorum flies in one generation from Mai to July.
Larvae feed on aphids.
