Classification:
Oxyna parietina belongs to the subfamily Tephritinae, tribe Tephritini.
Distribution:
In parts of Europe.
Habitat:
Meadows, forest edges, everywhere where the host plants of the larvae (Arthemisia) grow.
Description:
Length 4 - 4.5 mm
Similar species:
The flies can easily be confused with other species whose wings are similarly patterned.
Biology:
Oxyna parietina forms one generation per year. Adults of Oxyna parietina fly in May and June. After mating, females lay eggs into the stems of host plants belonging to the composite family. Known host plants are common wormwood (Artemisia vulgaris), grand wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) and field wormwood (Artemisia campestris). After one to two weeks the larvae hatch. They eat, develop and pupate in the stems. After overwintering in pupal stage, the adults hatch in May. They bore a hole into the stem and leave it.
Natural enemies:
Pteromalus parietinae (Chalcidoidea: Pteromalidae) - Endoparasitoid
Chlorocytus sp. (Chalcidoidea: Pteromalidae) - Ectoparasite
