Description:
The Maple Button Acleris forsskaleana has a wing span of 12 - 17 mm. The forewings have a whitish or pale yellowish basic coloring with a distictive reticulated brown pattern.
The specimens can look very different due to a variably sized greyish suffusion across the centre of the forewings.
Biology:
The moths fly from June to September from dusk onwards.
The main foodplants of the species are field maple (Acer campestre), sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) and Norway maple (Acer platanoides).
Acleris forsskaleana hibernates as a caterpillar. The caterpillars feed and develop well protected in a longitudinally folded or rolled leaf. In this shelter the adult caterpillars pupate in a white silk cocoon. The new generation hatches in June.
Acleris forsskaleana forms one generation per year.
