I found the almost white caterpillar of
Eupithecia centaureata shown here on August 21, 2019 at tansy (
Tanacetum vulgare).
After I have offered the caterpillar beside tansy also centaury (
Centaurea sp.) for test purposes, it moved immediately to these. It has eaten and changed its colour to greenish. On August 28th the caterpillar was thick and lay dead on the ground.
A parasitoid larva hatched from the bulging skin on the same day. Immediately after hatching, the larva began to produce a dark web. The 6 partial pictures show the daily progress of the work, starting from 29 August. After the 3rd day the produced fibres became slightly lighter.
The animal was still active on the 5th and 6th day. The transition to the pupa, which had already taken place on September 2, could only be seen in the photos. The length of the pupa was almost 4 mm.
I suspect that under natural conditions the species spins and pupates in a small cave in the ground.
The following pictures show the development of the pupa. Unfortunately no imago emerged, because the pupa has not survived.
